Paul Allen, Senior Team Manager, Housing Assessment team, Harrow Council
Having worked within housing for 4 years, as a Homelessness Assessment Officer for Harrow Council, I wanted to broaden my knowledge of housing and gain a nationally recognised housing qualification. The 2 year HNC Housing Studies course at Hammersmith College, which covered all aspect of housing, was available and after gaining permission from my employer I applied and was accepted onto course starting in September 2009.
I enjoyed all aspects of the course and gained knowledge from of all the modules that were covered, particularly those related to housing management, construction, finance and strategy. Having a variety of specialist lecturers kept things fresh and I found the assignments and exams challenging. The course was well run by course leader Sonia Leeyou, who I found to be very supportive and encouraging.
Having completed the course, I have a greater overall understanding of housing which I have been able to put to good use at work. Since completing the HNC Housing Studies course I have been promoted to a management position within the Housing Needs Team and I certainly feel that completing the course, opened up opportunities for me to both advance and develop as a housing professional.
